The Director General of the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey attended the opening ceremony of the 5th CEMEREM Conference, hosted by Taita Taveta University at the Taita Hills Safari Resort & SPA, Taita Taveta.
The biennial International Conference, themed “Natural resources management in Africa’s primary natural resource sector: Technology and innovation for a sustainable future”, brought together global experts, researchers, policy makers, industry players, academia and practitioners from public, private and civil society groups, and other stakeholders to exchange knowledge, showcase innovations, and chart sustainable pathways for Africa’s mining and natural resources sector.
In his remarks, Brig. Kipkosgey affirmed KSA’s commitment to nurturing and expanding Kenya’s domestic space sector and space economy as a vital contributor to national socioeconomic development. He added that in today's data driven decision-making processes, satellite data provided vital means of managing natural resources such as minerals, forests and water resources through continuous monitoring and predictive analytics.
He lauded the strong collaboration existing between KSA, Taita Taveta University, and Expertise France under the data governance inititiative in enhancing use of earth observation capabilities in decision support in agriculture and food security, environmental monitoring and natural resources management, among others. Through the collaboration, Expertise France will support the establishment of an earth observation data lab at the institution, which will be vital for ideation, incubation and acceleration of innovations of solutions to societal challenges using earth observation data.
The Kenyan-German Centre of Excellence forMining, Environmental Engineering, and Resource Management (CEMEREM) celebrated a key milestone in its 10th anniversary. The Centre has been forging close collaboration between Kenyan and German universities to foster innovative and sustainable solutions for the mining sector. It seeks to strengthen practice-oriented education, applied research, and capacity development in mining, processing, environmental engineering, and resource management – though training of new generations of professionals and the training of practitioners.
