International Astronomical Union (IAU)

The NameExoWorlds hosted every year by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) offers all countries the opportunity to name one exoplanet and its host star. All countries have the opportunity to name one exoplanet and its host star. The chosen names are then recognized by IAU as official names. Last year a Kenyan team of professional and amateur astronomers, astronomy enthusiasts, teachers and students to proposed a set of names for the star GJ 1214 and exoplanet GJ 1214b. These names have been approved and are now catalogued by the IAU as the official names of the star and exoplanet.

Congratulations to our Kenyan team for putting the country and its culture on the Cosmic map.
